Estos trabajadores, históricamente pertenecientes a una de las castas más bajas de la sociedad india, sostienen el ritmo cotidiano de la ciudad desde antes del amanecer, expuestos a productos químicos, temperaturas extremas y un esfuerzo físico agotador. Su oficio, transmitido de generación en generación, ilustra una paradoja común en las grandes urbes: cuanto más esencial es un trabajo, más invisible parece volverse.
Este proyecto documenta su labor, visibiliza sus condiciones y reivindica la dignidad de quienes, desde el anonimato, mantienen en marcha la maquinaria cotidiana de una de las ciudades más pobladas del planeta.
Within the chaos of Mumbai, the Dhobi Ghats form the largest open-air laundry in the world, where thousands of dhobis hand-wash the clothing of an entire city.
These workers, historically belonging to one of the lowest castes in Indian society, sustain the city's daily rhythm long before dawn, exposed to chemical agents, extreme temperatures, and exhausting physical labor. Their trade, passed down from generation to generation, embodies a paradox common to all great cities: the more essential a job is, the more invisible it seems to become.
This project documents their labor, sheds light on their living conditions, and reclaims the dignity of those who, from anonymity, keep the everyday machinery of one of the most densely populated cities on Earth in motion.
